GRAMMAR: Direct / Indirect Questions – Polite Forms
Direct Questions – these are the normal questions we ask friends and family, plus people we know well
Indirect Questions – these are more formal and polite. We use them when talking to a person we do not know very well, or in professional situations
Direct: Where is the car park?
Indirect: Could you tell me where the car park is, please?
Direct: What time does the restaurant open?
Indirect: Do you know what time the restaurant opens?
Direct: How much does this cost?
Indirect: I’d like to know how much this costs, please?
Direct: What is your name?
Indirect: May I ask your name please?
